As you all know moving in to the 3rd of year of Medicine means I’ve now stepped in to the realm of clinical Medicine which if you read my post from the beginning of the year you would know I’m terribly excited about and am thoroughly enjoying. I also touched on the daily exhaustion due to the new physical demands placed upon us. So this post is a bit about that…

My Story of Tiredness….

Ask every med student what they’re planning to do at the end of the day and they will say “sleep”, so here I am putting it out there that we’re all walking zombies out here. I’ve now adjusted to clinical placement lifestyle a bit more so whilst I’m still tired, I’m not falling-asleep-the-moment-you-sit-on-the-sofa-tired. There’s a few things that you need to adjust to when it initially comes to clinical medicine: (1) being on your feet for a good portion of the day, (2) is the sheer energy it takes to have to spend all day everyday interacting with patients and physically applying things we have been taught (3) the fact that we have to try and focus throughout each clinical activity (there’s no room for zoning out like you might in lectures) because you have absorb knowledge like a sponge during placement, (4) we are in much MUCH more than our pre-clinical years – some days I leave the house at 7 am-ish and I return about 6-ish so that’s a near 12 hrs for you (5) studying is obviously still a thing and having vast amounts of material to cover is mentally exhausting as we all know. And, just to add an extra thing for me…on top of all that I’ve been comutting everyday so that about an hour’s drive one way everyday.

So, I tried sleeping more, drinking more etc to help combat this new level of exhaustion I haven’t quite felt with anything else before…but nothing seemed to work. I suppose it’s one of those things that you need to allow your body to adjust to (as it now has finally done a few blocks in). After my first block I remembered about BrainZyme which I had briefly tried some time ago so I thought I’d give those another try and hope they can perform some miracles…

What is Brainzyme?

BrainZyme is essentially a brain food supplement and is the UK’s first Brain Food Supplement Nutritional Cognitive Enhancer (NCE). It’s British manufactured and it’s ingredients are all natural, tested and verified. BrainZyme supplements claim to improve mood, concentration, attention, energy, focus and memory (to name a few)!

There are 3 types of Brainzyme: original, professional, elite. Original is essentially the mildest. Professional and Elite are both a little stronger, but the difference between them being that Professional is designed to be used for more high pressure situations and Elite is better for long-term use as it promotes brain health. Professional is supposed to have the greater effect on concentration, and Elite has an additional benefit of being able to enhance your mood.

The supplements include a multitude of amazing ingredients that are known to enhance mental performance such as matcha green tea and choline, as well as many other great vitamins and minerals. It’s made of purely natural ingredients and the supplements are completely vegan, gelatine free, GMO free, gluten free!

What was my experience?

For my own problems I thought Brainzyme Elite would be best suited as I was planning on taking it daily to help keep me awake and I thought the improvement in memory, brain function and mood were pluses that I’d definitely want!

Now that I’ve tried it I definitely have to back the claim that Brainzyme does wake you up. The effect isn’t instant, but in about half an hour or so I saw a significant difference in my alertness and ability to focus. The best way to describe it is that it clears your brain fog. I took 1 capsule in the morning for about a week and I noticed the significant difference in my energy levels. However, like I mentioned earlier my mornings start as early as 7, 6 and sometimes even 5….so by the time it got to lunchtime I started to feel myself slipping back into a tiredness mode. I then switched things up a bit and started taking a capsule just before lunch and each time I did that I was able to stay focussed and in the zone for the rest of the afternoon.

One of the other things Brainzyme claims is that it prevents you from procrastinating which is something I was initially quite sceptical about. I would have thought procrastination is just down to yourself and your own motivation. And while I can say taking a capsule doesn’t suddenly fill you with new founded motivation, the fact that it clears your brain and makes you more focussed in turn does indeed mean you’re more productive. In terms of the claimed memory improvement, that’s something I can’t really measure and hence can’t speak for or against.

Do I recommend Brainzyme?

I think Brainzyme is incredible. I don’t take it everyday any more because I don’t like the idea of becoming reliant on anything to stay awake, but there are some days when I know I’m doing to be out of the house for 12 hrs, or I’ve only managed 4 hrs of sleep the night before, or I know I’m going to have to concentrate in a really important teaching session in the evening – those days I’ll take a capsule with me. And the days I do take one I notice a significant difference. This is why I really believe brainzyme can significantly help us students, whether it’s for the pre-exam cramming or placement exhaustion like with me. I’d recommend you all give it a try and see for yourself. You might find it helps each of you in different ways and find your own times in the day to take it to keep you at your level of peak performance. I think it’s definitely worth trying it out!

You can view the different brainzyme products here! I’d love to hear your thoughts on it and more about how you felt with Brainzyme. Let me know in the comments if you’ve given it a go!
