In year 1 and 2 you learn basic science, you don’t learn a lot about clinical medicine which is actually very different. So when you go into your clinical placements in year 3 you already know the basics of how the body works, but you then learn to apply it.

In Manchester in 3rd year we have “TCD cases” which is similar to PBL. It stands for Themed Case Discussion and each week we focus on a particular condition. We then have an online package that we work through that has pre-recorded lectures and material – that’s where we get our clinical knowledge from. During the placements we also get teaching on the ward (bedside teaching) that’s relevant to each speciality and we learn more of the clinical skills, examination skills, common presentations relevant to that speciality.
